Adversarial attacks involve manipulating the input data to an AI system in such a way that it misinterprets the data, leading to incorrect outcomes. For the military, such vulnerabilities could have severe consequences. For example, an AI system could potentially misidentify a civilian vehicle as a military target due to manipulated visual signals, known as "visual noise." This type of error could lead to unintended casualties, highlighting the critical need for robust defenses against such attacks.

The GARD program, which has been under development since 2022, aims to address these vulnerabilities by researching ways to make AI systems more resilient against deception. Among these resources are:

  • The Armory virtual platform: Hosted on GitHub, this platform serves as a scalable and repeatable "testbed" for evaluating adversarial defenses, allowing researchers to assess the robustness of AI systems in a controlled environment.
  • Adversarial Robustness Toolbox (ART): This toolkit provides developers and researchers with the means to defend and evaluate their machine learning models against a range of adversarial threats.
  • The Adversarial Patches Rearranged In Context (APRICOT) dataset: This dataset facilitates reproducible research on the effectiveness of physical adversarial patch attacks on object detection systems, providing a real-world context for testing defenses.
  • Google Research Self-Study repository: This repository contains materials that represent common ideas or approaches to building defenses against adversarial attacks, serving as a valuable resource for researchers.

Despite these advancements, concerns remain among some advocacy groups about the potential for AI-powered weapons to misinterpret situations and engage without proper cause, particularly if signals are not deliberately manipulated. The fear is that such errors could lead to unintended escalations in already tense regions, underscoring the need for continuous improvement in the security and reliability of AI systems in military applications.

The Pentagon's efforts through the GARD program represent a proactive approach to mitigating the risks associated with AI in defense settings. By developing and disseminating tools and resources aimed at enhancing the robustness of AI systems against adversarial attacks, the Department of Defense is taking crucial steps toward the responsible development and deployment of autonomous weapons, ensuring they serve their intended purpose without falling prey to the potentially devastating consequences of deception.
