Flux, also known as FLUX.1, is a text-to-image model developed by Black Forest Labs. It's designed to generate high-quality images quickly based on detailed user prompts.

Flux, a series of advanced text-to-image generation models, is a creation of Black Forest Labs, a company founded in 2024 by Robin Rombach, Andreas Blattmann, and Patrick Esser—former engineers from Stability AI. Headquartered in Freiburg, Germany, the company builds on the technological legacy of Stable Diffusion while aiming to redefine AI-generated visuals. The Flux models are known for their efficiency, high-quality output, and versatility, making them suitable for various professional and personal applications.

The Flux series comprises three main variants: Flux Pro, Flux Dev, and Flux Schnell. Flux Pro, the flagship model, delivers outstanding image quality and prompt responsiveness, tailored for professional use through API access. Flux Dev, an open-weight model available for non-commercial use, caters to developers interested in experimentation and is accessible via platforms like Hugging Face. Meanwhile, Flux Schnell, released under the Apache 2.0 license, offers swift image generation, making it ideal for individual and non-commercial projects.

What sets it apart is its speed and efficiency, capable of producing high-quality images in just 1 to 4 steps. This rapid processing makes it suitable for real-time applications like video content creation and live-streaming environments. In October 2024, the company unveiled Flux 1.1 Pro, introducing Ultra Mode for high-resolution images up to 4 megapixels and Raw Mode for hyper-realistic photography-like outputs.

In November 2024, Black Forest Labs expanded its offerings with Flux.1 Tools, a suite of enhancements for image editing. These include Flux Fill for seamless in-painting and out-painting, Flux Depth for manipulating depth-based visuals, Flux Canny for precise edge guidance, and Flux Redux for creating variations of existing images. These tools are available in both Dev and Pro versions, catering to a diverse range of users, from hobbyists to professionals.

While the Flux models have been praised for their exceptional prompt fidelity and photorealistic outputs—especially in areas like realistic hand generation—they have also sparked discussions around ethical and legal concerns. The possibility of misuse and the ambiguity surrounding the training data's provenance are notable challenges. Despite this, it has cemented its position as a powerful and accessible AI tool for content creators and developers.
