Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is set to launch an innovative BTech program in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics, starting in the academic year 2024-25, making it a pioneering move among global tech education trends. This newly introduced course, designed to seat 50 students, will accept admissions through the highly competitive Joint Entrance Exam (JEE).
V Kamakoti, the director of IIT Madras, outlined the comprehensive nature of the program in a recent statement to PTI. “This program is crafted to develop expertise in varied facets of AI and data analytics and provides an extensive perspective on its applications across multiple industries,” he stated. The program will focus heavily on the core subjects of Math Fundamentals, Data Science, as well as foundations in AI and Machine Learning, supplemented with courses in Application Development and Responsible Design. This ensures a holistic education that encompasses both technical skills and ethical considerations.
What sets the BTech program apart is its unique interdisciplinary approach, integrating insights from engineering, science, and humanities to foster a well-rounded understanding of AI’s multifaceted impact. Kamakoti emphasized the uniqueness of the curriculum, claiming it to be “the first of its kind in the world,” designed to equip students with the necessary tools to excel in various AI domains.
The course will be hosted under the auspices of the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI at IIT Madras, which was established through a generous Rs 110 crore endowment from Sunil Wadhwani, an IIT Madras alumnus and co-founder of IT giants IGATE and Mastech Digital. This significant financial backing highlights the institute’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge technological education and research.
Director Kamakoti also highlighted the flexibility of the new BTech program, which allows students to customize their educational journey. A wide selection of electives both from within the department and from other academic disciplines at IIT Madras will enable students to explore their personal interests deeply. This includes advanced topics such as speech and language technology, computer vision, and time-series analysis, thereby fostering a richer educational experience.
The curriculum, Kamakoti revealed, is the result of over a decade’s experience and feedback from faculty members who are leaders in their fields. “Through this program, IIT Madras aspires to mold top-notch AI professionals, entrepreneurs, and researchers equipped to confidently tackle the grand AI challenges in our rapidly evolving marketplace,” he added.
As AI continues to reshape industries globally, the introduction of such a program by IIT Madras not only enhances its stature as a leading technological institute but also significantly contributes to India’s growing influence in the global tech arena. The course aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, preparing students to lead and innovate in the ever-changing landscape of technology and data science.
